张锲，1933年生于安徽省寿县一个偏僻的乡村。父母都是小学教师。15岁参加工作，做过文工队员、粮库司磅员、工会干事、报纸副刊编辑等。1957年，被错划为右派份子，喂过猪，种过菜，扛过粮包，拉过粪车，当过兽医……。1978年平反后，曾担任蚌埠市文联副主席、主席，安徽省文联副主席。1984年调入北京，先后任中国作家协会书记处书记、常务书记。现为中国文联副主席、中国作协副主席、中华文学基金会副会长兼总干事、中国报告文学学会会长、全国政协委员。

他写过诗，写过戏和电影，也写过小说、散文和报告文学等，是我国粉碎“四人帮”后特别活跃的著名作家之一。他的一些作品曾多次获得全国性的文学大奖，并被翻译介绍到国外。

Zhang Qie was born in 1933 in a backwater of a village in Shouxian County of Anhui Province, to a family of primary school teachers. He went to work at the age of 15 at posts likemember of a Song and Dance Troupe, scale man of a grain depot, a clerk of a trade union, editor of the supplement to a newspaper, etc. In 1957 he was labeled as rightist. He was made to work by raising pigs, planting vegetables, carrying grain sacks, pulling manure carts, and tendering animals. In 1978 he was rehabilitated. And he was appointed Vice Chairman, and Chairman of Pangpu Literary Association, Vice Chairman of Anhui Literary Association. In 1984 he was transferred to Beijing. He worked as secretary and executive secretary of China Writers Association. Concurrently he is Vice Chairman of China Literary Association, Vice Chairman of China Writers Association, Vice Chairman and General Executive Secretary of China Literary Foundation, Chairman of China Reportage Society, member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

He has written poems, plays and cinema scripts, and also novels, essays, and reportage. He is one of those famous writers who were especially active after the downfall of the Gang of Four in China. Some of this works have been granted literary awards at the state level, and have been translated into foreign languages.
