Lu Xun, originally named Zhou Shuren, alias Yu Cairen, was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province in 1881.
Lu Xun was a great writer, thinker and revolutionist of China. He began his schooling at age of six, and attended Sanwei Study at twelve under the guidance of Mr. Shou Jingwu. In 1898 he left his country to be admitted into Jiangnan Marine School in Nanjing, later shifted into Mine School affiliated to Jiangnan Army School. After graduation early in 1902, he was chosen to study in Japan, first majoring at medicine, later at literature with a dream to change national spirit. He returned to China in August, 1909.
In 1918 Lu Xun published in La Jeunesse his Lunatic’s Diary, the first novel of the vernacular Chinese literature, formally initiating his splendid career as a writer. In succession, he published his collected short stories of Call to Arms, Wandering, etc. “April 12” counterrevolution coup radically changed him from an evolutionist into a revolutionist influenced by the Marxism. He was recommended as the member of standing committee of “The Left League” when founded in March 1930, and became the leading writer of “Left-Wing Cultural Movement” under the leadership of the Communist Party.
His last decade of scribers are imbued with materialistic dialectic and characterized by the sharp militancy, like daggers and harpoons. Those works are collected as Nothing More, Digression, Double-minded, Mixed Accent, Pseudogarph of Freedom, Chat on Love affairs, Fancy-Edge Literature, Scribble at Qiejie Garret, etc. He died of illness in Shanghai on Oct. 19, 1936.
